GROW Behaviour log

Big behaviour is communication. This simple behaviour log helps you look beyond the behaviour, spot patterns and start understanding the ‘why’ behind those tricky moments.

Big behaviour is communication. Let’s get curious about what’s happening around it.

When a child or person is having frequent meltdowns, biting, hitting, yelling, refusing, running away or other big behaviours, it can be hard to work out why, especially when you’re right in the middle of it.

Our free GROW Behaviour Log is a simple tool designed to help parents, carers, allied health and educators step back and look for patterns.

Rather than focusing only on what the child did, the log helps you notice:

  • what was happening before the behaviour
  • what the behaviour actually looked like
  • what happened afterwards
  • whether there are patterns around time, activities or transitions
  • possible sensory, social, physical or emotional triggers
  • strategies you might trial next.

Why track behaviour?

One difficult moment often doesn’t tell us very much.

But when we record several moments across a few days, patterns can start to appear.

Perhaps it happens before lunch. During transitions. In noisy environments. When a child is tired. When play is interrupted. Or when the demands of an activity become too much.

The goal isn’t to label behaviour as “good” or “bad”. It’s to better understand what the behaviour may be telling us.

How to use it

Download and print the Behaviour Log and keep it somewhere handy.

When a big behaviour occurs, jot down what happened before, during and after. Keep your observations short and factual, you don’t need to write an essay!

After you’ve collected a few examples, use the Patterns & Analysis page to look across them. The final page gives you space to record strategies to trial and a follow-up plan.
